“If I didn’t drink, how would my friends know that I loved them at 2 AM?” – Anon
The days are long, the sun is out, and the vibes are good. Oh yes, we’re in the heart of another awesome summer – and guess what? Fourth of July celebrations are nearly here – so let’s party its Independence Day 1776. If you’re hosting this year’s celebrations and you’re a little stuck for ideas, never fear because we’ve put together a rundown of the best 4th of July drinking games just for you! These games are sure to get everyone revved up and mingling at your Independence Day bash.
American Flag Beer Pong
The 4th of July is one of the most patriotic days of the year, so why not take a classic drinking game and add a little personalized American spin to it?
So, here’s how it goes:
What You’ll Need: 35 cups (15 red, 11 white or clear, 9 blue), a pair of ping pong balls, a table, and plenty of beer or cider.
Instructions: Rather than arranging the cups the usual beer pong-style triangle formation, you can use them to create something that resembles the American flag.
Here’s how you do it using five rows of seven cups:
- Row 1: The first three cups should be the color blue, and the rest should be red.
- Row 2: The first three cups should be blue, and the remainder should be white.
- Row 3: The first three cups should be blue, and the rest should be red.
- Row 4: Only white cups
- Row 5: Only red cups
Once you’re all set up, you just need to split into two teams and follow the rules of beer pong – just like this…
The True American Drinking Game
This tricky little drinking was made famous by the comedy New Girl and although it takes a little time to get your head around it, once you do, the laughers and banter will be endless.
Instructions: The rules are a little too complex to explain here so we’ll direct you to a revised set of True American rules and to give you a flavor of what it might play out like, here‘s a little visual stimulation for you…

Vodka or Water?
In stark contrast to the last drinking game, this one is pretty simple. And when you’re celebrating something truly epic like Independence Day, you need at least one of the 4th of July drinking games to require little or no thinking.
Instructions: So, as we said, this one is simple. You fill up a load of shot glasses with clear liquors and put them on the table. Then, one person then picks a shot at random to one and takes it, neat, before saying, “aaaah water” (or something similar).
If someone tries to call their bluff, the person has to prove that it was water by presenting them with the empty shot glass for a smell test. If they have lied, they must move onto shot number two, and so on, until they can pass their drink off for water. If nobody calls the shot-drinker’s bluff, the next person takes a shot, and the game continues.
And here is a variation of it in action (well it’s a Russian Roulette-style game – a spin-off drinking game you can try – but you get the picture) …
When it comes to sports, there’s nothing more American than baseball. That said, we simply had to include the good ol’ fashioned game of beer baseball in our definitive 4th of July drinking games list.
Instructions: In a nutshell, this game is a hybrid of traditional beer pong and flip cup, with an additional baseball spin here and there.
You set up a beer pong situation (see American Flag beer pong for instructions) with then also a flip cup formation on the side. Whenever someone hits the other team’s cup, the flip cup players on the side must play down the line, and the person doesn’t get their ball back until they finish successfully.

Yes, things could get messy – but, again, in a good way, of course.
Fireworks in The Sky
In the spirit of keeping things simple, here’s another easy to play gem for your 4th of July celebrations. It goes fireworks are in the sky…DRINK!
Instructions: Now, if you’re putting on your fireworks display you should play this drinking during the action, but if you’re going to stand outside or at a window and use other fireworks for your pleasure, you should set a time limit (remember, fireworks go off all day on American Independence Day) – otherwise you’ll be hammered by noon.
When the firework display kicks off start or the timer starts, every time a firework explodes gloriously into the sky, you take a drink – until it’s all over. Enjoy. And if you’d like some practice, here’s an epic firework display for you:
We hope these drinking games have you all fired up for your 4th of July celebrations!
